It Worked

The fly wheel weight on my dirt bike worked great.

Whether placebo effect or actually effective, the bike felt more stable, planted and had an easier “sweet spot” to find and control in technical sections.

It’s not like I’ve been riding enough this summer for it to have been me, but maybe it was?

Thorpe Ride

The girls and I headed up to Thorpe last Monday for a dirt bike ride. This time I did it solo – without the help of Craig.

They did awesome. Their skills have significantly improved – the most important being able to stop (similar to skiing). They’re about 80% – 85% of the way there to being able to stop all the time in whatever condition.

Lauren’s new helmet – that actually fits – makes a huge difference as well. She’s so much more comfortable and in control now that she can confidently see without worrying that her helmet will bump around to obstruct her view (very bad).

We even made it through the dry dam this time. They didn’t actually ride the portion under the dam, but we got all the bikes through and continued through what used to be the reservoir to the back where we had a little fire and cooked some lunch.

Lauren must be having a growth spurt, since she ate 3 1/2 hot dogs.

After lunch we put out the fire, and headed back.

Again they did great. Of course there were the usual ‘hit a rock, get bounced off track and crash incidents’, but those happen all the time. That’s part of riding a dirt bike.

We made it back safely and with a lot of fun.

We’ll probably do the same route a few more times, improving their stopping abilities and my confidence, before we look for other routes to take.

121 Seaport

Our corporate headquarters is moving in 2019 from it’s current location in the suburbs of Boston to right smack downtown.

They’ve signed a lease at 121 Seaport.

Should be interesting.

Should also be easier to get back and forth to the airport when I go up there.

Night Ride

Got the girls out on their dirt bikes Sunday evening and they were having such a good time that we let them convince us to ride into the dark.

We put glow bracelets around their arms and handlebars, then sent them ripping into the dark.

They actually managed to avoid each other and have a safe ride.

It was kind of cool, scary, and dumb.

Oh well. It worked out and they had a blast.

Deck’s Done

Not completely, but damn near close.

I have to cut some slivers to go at either end, but otherwise finished.

Honestly there were times when I doubted I’d see this day.

Glad it’s complete.

Pool Work Cont.

I got all the low and uneven spots leveled with scabs instead of shims.

Now it’s time to lay down the decking and be done with it finally.

Jen decided to wait until the water level was lowered before continuing with the tiles. In the meantime she applied herself to the annual poison ivy removal project.

Yeah. The timing is a little off, but better late than never.

Two Bikes in the Shop

Took the old Honda in for inspection and an oil change. It’s been a few years – a few too many years. Normally wouldn’t make sense this time of year considering the kids are back to school and that prevents me from riding it (have to take Lauren to Kindergarten), but I’m seriously considering selling it. Having it inspected should make that easier.

Also dropped off the KTM (different shop). I had ordered a flywheel weight over the winter in hopes of taming the 250 brashness, but when I went to finally install it in the spring decided it was more effort than I had time for. Here we are almost 2 seasons later and it’s finally getting done. If I’m lucky – really lucky – I’ll get to try it out next weekend.

Pool Work

Trying to do some pool work. Jen’s been painting the pool shed, which looks great.

Makes me want to dig up a picture of what it looked like previously. Here’s a link.

I’ve even started on finishing the deck.

This end is a mess from a leveling perspective. Technically I should probably take it all apart and rebuild, but considering it’s been open and unfinished for two years I just want it done – not necessarily done right.

Jen’s also working on the tiles. I think she found a method that not only works, but isn’t ridiculously difficult either.

Abigail’s First Day of Second Grade

Everything was awesome according to her.

New Routines

Any sign of fitness for me has been long gone.

Tasks of exertion not only leave me winded, but nearly down for the count.

Time for something new.

I went with the old standby. Easy enough to do and build slowly.

The hardest part is making it a habit. There’s so much going on. It’s difficult to add in what used to be basic.

Something has to change.
