I’ve said it before, and will continue to forget, but I should really record what all we do on weekends, so I’m not looking back all the time wondering where the time went.
Even now I wish I knew what I was doing last spring to feel like nothing’s been done until now.
Oh well.
Saturday was Jiu Jitsu, dropping cars off for inspection and Halloween.
Sunday started with drying out the deck cushions, then moved onto leaves.
The plan was to blow half the yard into a giant pile for the girls to play in.
And play they did.
Can you spot the Lu Bear?
And slackline fun.
And what’s a fall day without a fire and smoke sticks?

Friday September 19th woke up with a bad case of the dizzies. Headache, nausea, and general inability to think well.
By Wednesday the following week it was significantly better.
Here we are approaching two months later and I’m still experiencing off and on symptoms.
This morning was particularly unpleasant.
I suppose it will go away.
Visits to the Dr. solve nothing.

Got the girls introductory XC skis out this weekend to play with. First we got the bindings set appropriately for their boot/foot sizes, then I set them loose on an obstacle course.
The cushions were probably the most realistic thing they tried with the skis on.
They were slippery and awkward like real snow.
But outside was fun too.
Especially when we hit the slides.
Who doesn’t like skiing on slides?

Went out to a different neighborhood with different friends this year.
Pretty sure we’ll be going back next year.

October saw three different birthday parties for the girls – though we only have pictures for 2.
First was Norah’s (turned 6) outdoor backyard bash.
Don’t worry. The kids got plenty of runs on the zip line. This was just the test run.
You know who (Lu) on the trampoline
Norah’s older sister Willa clowning around (Abigail dashing through the background).
Then it was Maddies (no pictures).
Then Meghan’s (turned 5) at Chuck E Cheese.
Sharing a helicopter ride. Lu with a pony tail – that’s new and different.
Some video roller coaster ride. Not as scary as Abigail appears, but probably more interesting than Lauren’s tastes.
Mmmmmm pizza!

As I mentioned before, some friends were getting into dirt/enduro bikes.
A couple of guys I know had gotten this or that, but in the end it was no big deal.
Then Craig went and pulled the trigger. Craig got a Honda 250 dual sport.
Damn it Craig!
Still not convinced it’s the right path or investment for me, I decided to get the old MX working and try things out.
Sure it’s 35 years old (and probably too small), but it’s nearly free. Just some $ to get it running and a few $ for some gear…
eBay find
And I’m off to the races – er trail.
We’ll see. I have no expectations. Mostly curiosity at this point, but at least my investment is significantly lower than others I know. Yes I say that all proud with my chest puffed out, while Jen dismissively shakes her head.

She did this on her own. No prompting by me.

Last winter on our trip to the Adirondacks, Abigail noticed (while she was trudging along in her snowshoes) people skiing in – up and down the hills.
“Dad”, she asked, “how do you ski in up and down the trails?”
“With skins”, I told her.
Like everything cool to a kid, “I wanna do that!”
So what are ski skins? Here’s a quick lesson.
So I started thinking – planning – scheming even.
I found these introductory XC skis for the girls – both on ebay and at REI.
They allow for any winter boot and are about the size of their snowshoes, so the learning curve and setup should be easy. Being that they’re skis, this would give them quick/fun ways to go down the hills. The next problem is of course going up the hills.
XC skis (these included) have scales on the bottom to help with some ascension, but they’re only so effective. To easily climb they need full length skins.
Back to ebay.
Sure enough I found a cheap used pair for full length skis. There’s was plenty to make them into two pairs for the girls. Bought an installation kit for the second pair and we’re off to the races.
If they work, great! The girls could have a lot of fun and they could quickly adapt to bigger more technical back country skis. If they don’t work or don’t like them, no harm done. The majority of the project was used and cheap. Worth the experimentation effort.

ps. if they don’t work or regardless, I think I’m still buying light/effective sleds I can carry into the backwoods for the girls to zoom down the hills.
