Mostly against kids from her gym, but she worked hard and avoided any/all submissions.
Jen competed as well. She fought hard. She lost both her matches to submissions, which is kinda good considering they were supposed to last 5 minutes. That’s a long time for someone that’s only been doing this a month or so.

Parent/teacher conferences this week.
Lauren is doing so well and enjoying her time at school so much that we’ve decided to add another day to her week.
Granted it’s only an extra two and a half hours for her, but everyone’s excitement around the addition was significant enough to note.

With 2 kids and Jen going to the same gym, we qualified for the family plan.
Which meant, it wasn’t any extra for Jen to start taking Jiu Jitsu in addition to boxing.
Which also meant, I could take Jiu Jitsu too.
Work commitments have routinely been keeping me away from my workout nights on Mondays and Wednesdays, but there’s an adult beginners Jiu Jitsu class immediately following the girls classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Why not go? The girls can hang out for an extra 45 minutes (with the other kids of the parents who are also taking the class), and I can get a workout.
And a workout it is. Truly for the mind and body. It’s problem solving and strength all rolled into one. Like climbing, but more strenuous and slightly less dangerous.
Only problem is my shoulder. Remember all that PT and finally cortisone shot I got 2 years ago? Either I need it again or surgery.
We shall see.

Abigail had her second Jiu Jitsu tournament last month. It was a fundraiser for cancer prevention.
She did well. She got 3rd out of 4 competitors.
The really amazing part was the support and enthusiasm her coaches gave during her matches. They’re really top notch competitors (nationally ranked), and here they were on their hands and knees cheering her through.
Awesome stuff.
She’s got another tournament next weekend. Not expecting a podium, but she’s come really far in the last few months. It will be good to see her apply all that she’s learned.

Sorry. Haven’t posted in a while. Things have been busy.
Then when I finally do post, it’s this.
Don’t worry. She’s fine.
Woke up around 4:30 (or 3:30 because of the time change) to Abigail not breathing and Jen calling the Dr. Turns out she was breathing, but it was really raspy and difficult. We put her face over a bowl of hot water with a towel to hold in the moisture, then sat her in the bathroom with the shower going full steam. She was shaking and disoriented, but her breathing was getting somewhat better.
Jen decided to take her to the ER and off they went at 5 (or was it 4). I looked up croup, decided it wasn’t the end of the world and tried to go back to sleep. 20 – 30 minutes later Lauren woke up with nearly the same thing. I pulled her into bed, told her to sit up when she had to cough, but otherwise try to relax and get some sleep. That worked to some degree.
Abigail and mom came back around 7 (6?). The girls watched cartoons, while Jen and I slept a few more hours.
I’m half expecting it to happen again tonight. Should probably get to bed early in preparation for it.
They’ve got a humidifier going in their room. Hopefully that makes a difference.

Another great trip.
Hard to believe it all started from this.
Just four years ago.

Abigail is finally getting adult teeth.
She’s exstatic.
So don’t tell her they might have to pull the old ones.

The longer I go between rides the bigger the bike looks sitting in the garage.
The more often I ride the smaller it feels.

Haven’t climbed outside (and barely inside) at all this year.
Dirt biking has obviously taken over.
Besides being fun as hell, why is that?
I always enjoyed climbing. I love being outdoors, and the problem solving required by climbing is what has always kept me interested.
Unfortunately as my job gets more consuming, I have less capacity or struggle more with that problem solving.
Not that there isn’t a cerebral aspect to dirt biking, but there isn’t the fear of being 200′ off the ground to manage as well.
After a ridiculous week of traveling and/or meetings, having to get my brain into gear for a climbing day often proved more stressful than the relaxation I needed.
On a dirt bike there is rarely any fear to deal with. Also we can choose stupid simple dirt roads to ride in the event I’m still too consumed for technical logs and rocks. In climbing, there’s rarely anything stupid simple.
