Draining

Quick storm dumped a sea of water on the yard today.

Unfortunately left a lake around the swing set.

We had decided, because our kids our fearless climbers (yes, that’s our fault), to put an average of 8″ of playground mulch down around the swing set. Theoretically that would protect from a fall of 8′. Instead of just piling 8″ of mulch on the grass and around the swing set, we decided the right thing to do was dig down an average of 8″ and dump in the mulch.

Right or wrong that’s what we did.

Then it rained and the area filled up like a pond.

I have no doubt this is a problem caused by us. Digging the 8″ depth essentially created a basin in which to collect water. As you can see, we have a plan to try and keep it drained and dry, but our plan is not without problems.

You may also notice the pine trees behind swing set. They are down slope and the direction our drain should go, but they also have a lot (A LOT) of roots which makes digging drain trenches nearly impossible.

Hopefully filling the basin with mulch helps to displace a lot of the water that would otherwise fill it.

Hopefully the mulch doesn’t just float up and wash away.

Whatever. After another weekend of digging in the heat (and sick this time), I’m too tired to think about it let alone solve it.

I just want it all done, so I can play with my kids again.
