Another Trip on the Horizon

Possibly climbing Mt. Washington on Saturday.

I say possibly because there’s a lot of factors to consider this year.

This year we have 4 people going. This year we requested a more technical ascent (e.g. ropes, harnesses, Tuckerman Ravine, etc.). A more technical ascent with 4 people requires 2 guides.

Great!

Unfortunately a more technical ascent requires good weather.

Cool! The weather looks good.

Unfortunately the avalanche conditions have not been favorable.

This creates a couple of options for us.

If the weather is good and the avalanche danger low, we’ll likely climb something like The Lip, The Sluice, Right Gully or Lobster Claw in Tuckerman’s Ravine.

If the weather is good, the avalanche danger is bad in Tuckerman’s Ravine, but the avalanche danger is low in Huntington Ravine, we could climb something in Huntington and ascend to the summit (I think).

Regardless of weather, but avalanche danger is bad in both Tuckerman and Huntington Ravines, we have two separate options.

  1. Hike the Lion’s Head winter route trail to the summit.
  2. Skip Mt. Washington altogether and go ice climbing at Crawford Notch.

Something tells me we’ll be on Mt. Washington regardless. The clear (but windy) skies are too much to pass up.

As before to follow along you can track my Spot updates (GPS waypoints and messages) here. Be warned. They may be intermittent and without pattern. If we make the summit I’ll try to send a message, otherwise I’ll try to send a message at the point we turn around and another after that so you know we’ve turned around.

You can also follow the weather conditions of the mountain here.

Should be a good time. I’m really looking forward to it.
