Basement Progress

I use the word progress lightly. So far we’re only going backwards.

They started with removing the bottom 2′ of drywall from our family room.

Once they did that, you could see some of the sill was actually still wet. It hasn’t rained around here in 2 weeks.

In some places the wet reached up 5 or 6′. See the brown on the 2×4 touching the block? See the dark patches in the block? The dark patches are water. The brown on the 2×4 is rot. I can actually pick apart the 2×4 with my fingernails. This was the backside of the house. The side downhill from the park.

The front side of the house isn’t much better. On the front is/was beaver board between the 2×4’s and brick. The beaver board was completely soaked and rotted.

So it’s coming out.

The original plan was to only take out 2′ of drywall, then replace it when the drain was installed. In light of the extent of the moisture,

we’re ripping down the drywall to within 6″ of the ceiling and leaving it out. I’ll have a drywall hanging party or something later and put it back myself.

yay.
