Little Blue Flowers and Gold Finches

and other experiences of an enjoyable life…

Gretchen recognizes the sound of filling a bike water bottle from the fridge. From the other end of the house, she came running as I started preparing for our ride.

That’s a neat thing.

It’s been a while since she’s got to do a ride. Most mornings this summer have been too warm. Her lack of exercise showed. She didn’t quite have the exuberance of last winter or even the spring. I cut the ride short and gave her ample time at the watering holes. Hopefully cooler mornings are on their way (though August is usually our hottest month) and we can get back to some kind of habit.

The climb up the Sole trail was brilliant this morning. It’s named after a guy who lost the sole of his boot while building the trail. This morning it could have been named the Soul trail. The climb literally lifts you into a field of little blue flowers. With the stalks glistening from last nights dew, Gold Finches flew about from one to the next.

It was heaven.

ps. turns out the little blue flowers are probably cornflowers, but I like “little blue flower” as a better description.
