One key for my place is checking the gutter. Which usually means when I see they are over flowing in a storm. The seeds for trees blow around and can back it up
Ironically I was on the roof a week or so ago and checking the gutters. They were clear, though the front one tends to back up in heavy rains.
This particular storm was coming from the south (direction the window faces) with high winds. I think the combination of the storm pattern and the window being old is what caused this.
