Made an appointment to get a backup camera installed in the new Subaru.

The view out the back is tricky, and well, we’ve got little girls running around the driveway all the time.

Some models come with the camera. Mine did not.

Reading the online discussion forums I found where some people have managed to use/find the existing wiring harness and retrofit a camera to their stereo head unit in models that didn’t come with the camera.

Not having the time to try that route, I called a local stereo installer instead. Their preferred install is all new parts – camera, wiring harness, and stereo head unit. Opposed to hacking something in, which is fine by me as long as it works.

They’ll have to take apart nearly the entire interior to run the wiring. Being a new car the plastic panels should all be flexible enough to pop out nicely and re-install cleanly.

We’ll shall see.

I’ll keep my fingers crossed.
