Our house has
this overhang in the front approximately three feet out from the
first floor. It runs the entire length of the house. When I was
working on the Home Network
project I ran into some issues with the insulation and wires I
found in the overhang area I was working in. Quite frankly it was
disgusting. Mice had totally over-run the area. The wires were
chewed and the insulation fouled. I knew I'd have to do
something about the rest of it at some
point.
Then the
Attic Gap
project came along. It shared some of the space of the overhang and
the foulness that went with it. Though it was still disgusting
(as you can see in the picture), the thing that finally convinced
me to do the job was the draft I could feel pouring in through
the overhang. With the Attic Gap sealed, I had to move onto the
next "Gap" project.
So all the
insulation came out. With it came two mice and a rat - nasty! Hidden
behind the insulation I found this. I've found worse, but it's
still annoying to
find.
With all the
insulation out, I could start filling the gaps with spray foam
insulation.
When the foam was dry
it was time for new R-19 insulation. It's twice the thickness of
what was there and it's all nice and
clean.
The overhang is done as well as the Attic Gap. That's
two sides down and two to go. Stay tuned.
