There is space in the attic over the
garage attached to the house, but it wasn't very
usable
. The opening to it was tiny and
there was very little support up there beyond what was needed
for the roof.
The support wasn't totally an issue. I
wasn't looking to store engine blocks up there, but a little
more insurance is
always nice.

We started by scabbing 10' 2x4"s to
the bottoms of the trusses. If you look close, you can see the
treated 2x4" going in under my
feet
.

|
My Dad brought up his nail gun which made
quick work of all the
nailing
.
|
|
|
With all the trusses scabbed, it was time
to add temporary support and cut the two trusses we needed cut
for a bigger
opening.
|
|
|
The original plan was to frame the
opening big enough for a 30" x 54" attic pull down
door/stairs. After making the opening and getting the chairs
into the attic, the pull down door doesn't
seem necessary. The size of the opening is good, but the
pull down stairs
not.

These are
the chairs I wanted to put up there. They are our deck and
pool chairs. Not very heavy, but need a dry and clean place to
stay for the
winter
.

Here are the chairs in the
attic. Not much space, but just right for all the
chairs.
|
|
|
And the four swivel chairs - looking back
toward the
house.
The project isn't
considered complete. I need to do some rewiring (you can see
the wires hanging around in previous pictures) and make a door
for the
hole.

On a rainy day in June I decided to try
and finish the opening. As you can see I got some trim up
around the opening so it doesn't look so
ragged.
I also started working on the rewiring. The
two wires you see through the opening were a real pain in the
ass when it came time to move furniture through the opening. I
got the wires rerouted, but it took another week to get some
of the things they were powering rewired.
It probably won't be until the fall before I
finish and complete the rewiring. I got the absolute
necessary things working, but stuff like the exterior garage
light and switch are still
disconnected.
