When we moved
into our house, one of the first things we had to do was find a
place for the cat litter box. Downstairs we had a room with a closet
that appeared perfect. We cut a hole in the closet door
and were done. Unfortunately we ended up using the same closet
for our home computer and network equipment. All that electronic
equipment and the dust of the litter box made the closet a not so
nice place, so the litter box had to move. Also downstairs we have a
work/storage room of sorts. All along the one wall are built in
shelves. This wall is the other side of the hallway in our
downstairs. We decided we'd make a "cubby" in the bottom shelf with
access for the cat from the hallway and access for us from inside
the work/storage room. Following?
Here's the bottom shelf in the
work/storage room. Through the wall in the back, I'll cut a hole for
the cat to access her litter box
cubby.

Here's the cubby

My cold started to
get to me I guess, cause things weren't going together as nicely as
I would have liked. The side panels were intended for the
outside of the framing, but there wasn't enough room under the
shelves to position the panels where I needed them on the
outside of my framing. I said the hell with it and put them
on the inside. It's only a cubby to hold a bin full of cat shit. No
reason to kill myself over it. The next problem was
the door for us to access the litter. I had a latch and hinge idea
in mind, but hadn't
thought it through
enough. It wasn't going to work. By this point my cold had gotten
worse. I was tired and
hungry, so I
left it for another
time.

Though the next day and home sick, I made
an attempt at the door. Again, it's not what I had imagined, but
it will work. I'm waiting till I've kicked this cold entirely before
I go cutting a hole through the wall to the
hallway.

Finally get around to
finishing the cat box. First thing to do is cut a whole through the
wall. This involved first cutting the press board wall on the
inside of the workroom, then cutting through the drywall and
paneling into the hallway. Once the hole was cut I had to
strengthen the opening with 2"x4"s. You can see the one in the
bottom already. I had to add three more between the interior
and exterior for strength. |
|
After strengthening
the opening with 2"x4"s I covered them with masonite for a
uniform/clean appearance.

|
Voila!
The final! Took us a little while to decide on trim, but
finally went with a few pieces we had lying around. Her old
space in the network closet is cleaned and closed. Not sure she's
used the new one yet, but she knows it's there.

Oh yeah. Now I'm officially the litter box
cleaner. Not sure how that works out, but whatever.
