Boat Rack
June 14, 2008

Since we got a canoe a couple of years ago, it's been taking up space in our pool area. You can actually see it in satellite imagery of the house and yard .

The pool area was convenient for security. Besides the satellite imagery, you wouldn't know the canoe is there and there's a locked gate to get to it.

As we've been aquiring pool area furniture, the canoe has become a problem.

Marsh Creek has the solution. The park has these racks they rent to people for stowing their boats over the summer. No. The solution isn't to rent a space, but build a similar rack in our yard.

Though we have only one boat now, the plan is to have more, so our own rack makes more sense.

Looking at their design, I see I need two 6" x 6" posts to start.

Whenever you plan to dig, you should find out where there might be buried cables or other utilities . Having FIOS installed a few years ago, I had an idea there were probably cables in the area we chose to put the rack.

I called 811 to notify "the powers that be" that I was going to be digging and needed my yard marked. They asked that I mark the area with white paint (I used white boards instead) and they'd mark where the utilities were if there were any in that area.

As you can see, the area is full of them.
