Maine Again

Got back from another great vacation in Maine.

We went back to Islesboro again this year – same island as last year, but different house.

The house was pretty cool. It’s what I’d call storybook architecture, though technically some mixture of Arts & Crafts and cottage.

The girls went crazy for the third floor tower. They had to sleep up there every night. Because there were no curtains (those are sheets we hung on the windows), they woke up every morning at sunrise. The house sat on 12 acres of waterfront property. At night there wasn’t a single light you could see unless you stared off across the bay to the few lights visible three miles away on the mainland.

As usual it was seafood for nearly every meal.

At least this time we harvested some of the food ourselves. In a single 20 minute session at low tide, we once harvested 49 mussels from the rocks on our beach. Go back the next day, and there’d be 50 more.

The girls appetite for lobster has definitely grown. We could hardly eat it ourselves trying to pick and keep their plates full of the plump fresh meat.

With all the eating, we also kept plenty busy with lots of hikes.

Slacklining.

And bike riding.

And that pretty much sums it up.

I’ll try to post more when I have time, but as time went before vacation (vanishing) it’s likely to go after.

ps. We did split the drive this year. We left early Friday evening and made it as far as Harford, CT before stopping for the night. Didn’t get to Maine too much earlier than before, but it was less stressful trying to make the ferry. Drove home all in one day.
