Family Winter Camping
Trying to do a little catch up…
Back at the beginning of March, we all headed up to spend a weekend in the Adirondacks in winter. The original plan when we booked the cabin was that we didn’t really get good winters around here and this would be a cool way for the kids to experience real snow and cold. Then BAM! We had one hell of a winter, and nobody was really interested in more by the time the trip came around.
Luckily the ADK is pretty awesome and we had a great time.
The drive up was a little rough, but the food at all the local restaurants made up for it.
The girls managed a comfortable sled ride to Marcy Dam and back. A trip that took around 3 – 4 hours. It was in the 30’s that day, so that certainly helped.
The following day we all donned snow shoes (except Lauren. I carried her in the pack) and climbed Mt. Jo. Abigail did awesome. At first we were a little nervous as she kept tripping and falling on the flat approach. After 10 minutes or so, she was an expert and we decided to take the short, steep, icy approach to the top. Coming down we took the longer less steep trail and let Lauren and Abigail chase each other. It was so much fun watching them romp and play in the snowy woods.
The cabin we rented was different than Grace Camp that I normally get with the guys. This was the Campground Cabin right near the Adirondack Loj. It was perfect for the family, because we could drive right to it. We probably won’t stay there again next year, but we’ll definitely be planning another (or annual) ADK winter trip with the family.
