Volumes

Volumes are a way to gain more climbing area and variation without building more wall.

Having a limited amount of space in our downstairs, I’ve been wanting to try building some volumes for a while now.

After coming across this website/blog post, I was even more motivated to try. Though I skipped the measuring part and went straight to cutting and more cutting, mine didn’t come out too bad. It’s not like I don’t have enough scrap wood lying about, which is another great reason to make more volumes.

They’re nearly free!

I think next will be some kind of hexagonal structure.

Another added benefit is helping Abigail conquer her “large object on wall fear”. When faced with large holds or volumes on the routes she’s climbing, she generally avoids them for fear they will push her off the wall. It’s not an unnatural fear, and definitely something we can work on and overcome.

Can’t wait to get it on the wall tonight with the girls and set it all up!
