Handicap Swing

The other day at the park I noticed something I completely don’t understand.

They have these swings for handicap children. They’re large and very different looking than the other swings, so of course kids want to swing on them. Anything large and different than everything else has got to be better.

The part I don’t understand is the parents telling their kids they can’t swing on it because it’s broken.

It’s not broken.

Luckily Abigail wasn’t interested that day, or I would have sat her right up there and started pushing.

Am I missing something?

I have no clue.

Do you park in Handicap parking spaces? Same concept. Since children don’t understand, you just tell them it is broken.

I have a child with a disability and I have to wait for ABLE children to get off of it to my child can possibly swing.

By telling them the swing is broken all the time, then suddenly it works when a disabled child shows up doesn’t seem like the right message. At this age she’s too young to understand the situation. We simply swing and share when another child wants it – regardless of which kind of swing it is.
