Super Heated Gasses

For father’s day Jen had gotten me this cool temperature thingy that displays the temperature and humidity from up to five locations (4 remote, then the unit itself). So far we have a monitor outside, in the basement and in Abigail’s room. Of the three inside, I’d noticed lately Abigail’s room hovering around 71°- 72° F. That’s kind of odd considering her bedroom faces south (gets the most sun) and the thermostat is set at 75°F.

I also noticed the AC running a lot. Sure it’s crazy hot outside, but it seemed to be running more often and for longer periods of time.

Yesterday morning for some reason I had my shirt off and walked down the hall. Instantly I noticed a warm spot in the hallway – a very warm spot of air directly beneath the whole house fan vent. This shouldn’t be. The whole house fan has doors rated at something like R38. How could there be warm air in that spot in the hallway?

We pulled out a flashlight and looked up into the vent.

What the?

That fan’s not even a year old. The door motors shouldn’t be broken this soon.

Upon closer inspection (see the red square), I could see the door closing arm had come loose. Snapping it back on and running the fan, closed the door.

Whew! No warranty issues to deal with.

Now I just have to get over the fact that door has been open for a month dropping super hot attic air onto my thermostat directly below it and wafting cool AC air up into the attic.

Eh.
