We were scheduled to camp in an area called
Chesler Park the first night. Startgin from Elephant
canyon it was about a 3 mile hike. These are some of the features
in Elephant canyon. The formations have different names for
them. The previous formation would have been called a mushroom. When
the rock layer on top is harder than the rock material
underneath, the erosion can create a mushsroom feature. Other
features are needles (long skinny towers), arches and bowls. As you
can tell the white layer of rock was a lot harder than the red
layer. In some places you crumble the red layer with your
fingers.

|
As you can see there are
many layers of the white/red rock layers. The white layer on the
bottom, wasn't entirely the bottom. There are passages, canyons,
etc. all through and around the white
bottom.

|
Formations are getting
to be more needle like. There are at least three main areas to
Canyonlands NP. The are we were in was appropriately called the
Needles
District.

More features. A
lot of my pictures are just random features. It's so foreign to what
we normally
see.
|
|
The trail went down
between these two
rocks.
|
|
You can see the grooves
on the rocks as the sand blows through and slowly etches them
away..
|
|
The trail signs were
great. It doesn't take long for the sun and sand to take it's course
on things out
here.
