December 9th,
2005 Jen and I closed on our new house. December 12th, we started
ripping it apart. The first thing we noticed about our house when we
first started looking at it was the popcorn ceilings. All the
ceilings throughout the main floor were textured. It would be the
first to go. A guy I ride with (Craig Lander is his name. I highly
recommend him. Check him out at www.masterpaperhanger.net) is a
wallpaperer/painter
by trade and offered (or accepted my offer) to remove the
popcorn and paint the ceilings. On Monday December 12th he
and his son started the messy job of scraping and sanding
the ceilings smooth. He also removed all the wallpaper
borders that were in nearly
every
room.

In the front room they
ran into a problem. Turns out our roof has a leak. Three days after
buying our house, we discover it needs a new
roof.

After Craig was done for the
day Jen and I got in there and started removing base boards and
molding. It was all rather large and plain looking. We don't
plan on getting too fancy with our new molding, but we do want
something a little
nicer.

In the midst of our late
night and/or long day deconstruction, we decided this doorway needed
to be wider. We bought some books on drywall and framing,
researched load bearing wall construction and went to
town.

Walla! the expanded doorway.
We removed two feet from the left side. Between the
picture above and this one you can see it exposed more
of the window to the front room. Our ultimate plan is to replace
that window (and most of the wall actually) with a 4'x8' picture
window.

Turns out Jen is a natural
with joint compound. Together we made a pretty good team. I
performed the carpentry part of the job and she did the
finishing
work.

Onto the carpets. Each
bedroom had carpet over the subfloor, then the living room and
hallway had it too. It was
nasty.

Here's the carpet
removed from the hallway. You can see the pine floors that were
underneath.

The pine floors were in the
hallway, livingroom and eat-in kitchen.
