Canoe Trip Early Summer 1998

In the late spring or early summer of 1998 Jeff, Scott (Bailey) and I did a three day canoe trip on the Black Moshannon Creek and the Susquehanna West Branch west of Lockhaven, Pa . We started somewhere near interstate 80 and the Black Moshannon and ended in Renovo, Pa.

I picked up Scott's canoe a day or so in advance of the trip and drove to Bill's parents cabin in Pine Creek, Pa. On the way up my battery blew in Danville, Pa and I was scrambling to get to a Sears for a replacement.  Luckily some nice motorist gave me a ride to and from the mall in Bloomsburg for a replacment battery. I stayed the night at the cabin, then headed down to State College, Pa to meet Aaron (Clayton) for some mt. biking at Shingletown Gap. We hit some bars that night, then crashed at the Day's Inn.

Scott and Jeff showed up the following day in State College, then we headed west to start our trip.

Here we are paddling down the Black Moshannon. The area is surrounded by old strip mines, so the
water is a permanant orange from the acid mine drainage (high sulfar content).

Jeff steering the canoe.

Wild and crazy Scott paddling without a shirt and tossing back beers. His canoe was much smaller than
ours and more manuverable, so he was able to paddle by himself and keep up. For some reason his dog
Murdock didn't make this trip.

This shot was a little earlier, since the rapid ended up swamping Scott.

Permanantly stained rocks from the acid mine drainage.

This was our campsite the first night along the Black Moshannon.

And this was our campsite the second night along the West Branch. CJ and Scott spent the night outside
the tent. It was a bad idea for CJ, since he spent most of the night chasing and barking at things in the
woods.
