Adirondacks High Peaks
December 18 - 20, 2009

This is what breakfast in 5°F weather looks like.

This trip was different than our trips in the past. Though it was cold and there was some snow on the ground, it was still early winter in the Adirondacks. We saw a lot of wildlife (or evidence of - little poops on the snow were everywhere) that we don't normally see - scurrying tails off into the pines. There was also a lot more water and exposed creeks.

All packed up and ready to head out.

We took the Southside trail back to the parking lot. This was Jeff crossing Johns Brook near where the trail meets back with the Phelps trail. We made a similar crossing back in 2003. See it here. We decided on returning via the Southside trail because it looked to have less eleveation gain/loss. Though overall it made a general decent, there were some precarious moments of climbing up and over some small cliffs and boulders.

Shot of Grace Camp. Before this trip, I wasn't aware there was a heated cabin option in the Adirondacks. At $189 per night, it's not a likely option for me. Maybe one day somehow I'll get something together using it. The beauty of the Adirondacks in winter is actually worth the price.
